Organized in 1972 together with the opening of the hospital, the Department of Internal Medicine established the first Intensive/Coronary Care Unit, the first functioning Cardiac Arrest Team as well as the first accredited Internal Medicine Residency Program south of Manila. To date, it is the umbrella organization of various medical subspecialties.
